Harvest Celebration
In this two-part workshop, participants learn the historical importance of harvest and crop growing in Washington DC’s African American and Native American communities post civil war. Also learn about African American’s cultural past as gardeners in the Washington DC area and the important contribution of Native Americans to the celebration of Thanksgiving. Participants receive vegetables to take home and will take part in the feast celebration. Local business will participate in this harvest project–the last program this year in this gardening project series. This final workshop of the series will be lead by gardening expert, landscape designer, educator and entrepreneur, Derek Thomas. You might know Derek as the “Garden Guy” on WTTG Fox 5 TV.

The streets are being overrun with turkeys, dinosaurs, penguins, and reindeer! No, the zoo hasn’t opened their gates – it is the Annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade! With marching bands, Bolivian dancing groups, floats, giant characters and balloons, and Santa, the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade is the only Thanksgiving Parade in the metro DC area.
Held in downtown Silver Spring, the exciting parade traditionally heralds the start of the holiday season. The parade steps off from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and proceeds south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue. a special night of Old-Time American folk music as Music on the Farm rounds out its 2017 season with the Ken & Brad Kolodner Quartet! Regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players in the US, Baltimore’s Ken Kolodner has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, one of the finest practitioners of the clawhammer banjo, to perform tight and musical arrangements of original and traditional old-time music with a “creative curiosity that lets all listeners know that a passion for traditional music yet thrives in every generation.” The dynamic father-son duo pushes the boundaries of the Appalachian tradition by infusing their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful and unique interpretations of traditional and original fiddle tunes and songs. Performing on hammered dulcimer, fiddles, banjo, gourd banjo, hammered mbira, guitar and banjola, the Kolodners have recorded three CDs. They frequently perform with bassist Alex Lacquement ( Charm City Junction, The Bumper Jacksons ) and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Eddy ( The Early Mays ) and guitarist/vocalist Lucas Chohany. Join us on the Plaza at Promenade on Saturday, November 18th, from 4:30pm – 7:30pm, as we kick off the holiday season with fun for the whole family and light up the night sky with a dazzling fireworks show!

Fireworks begin at 7pm (viewable from the Plaza at Promenade)
Horse and carriage rides** (Please note that there is a $3 cash donation per rider; 100% of the proceeds will benefit local non-profit organization, Women Giving Back). Rides will run from 3:00pm until 6:00pm only as the horses must be back in their trailers before the firework show begins.
Donate a new, unwrapped toy/gift to Women Giving Back to give to children and teens in need this holiday season. Volunteers will be onsite to collect these items.
Entertainment, giveaways, balloon twisters* and more!
This event is free and open to the public, with the exception of the horse and carriage rides; 100% of the $3 per rider donation will benefit Women Giving Back.
Women Giving Back’s mission is to support local women and children in crisis, and build their confidence and self-esteem, by providing great quality clothing, shoes and accessories at no cost. For more information on how they serve the Prince William County community, click here.

$10.00 suggested donation to benefit the animals. No charge for children under 16. The turkeys will be fed at 1 P.M. at a special table loaded with grapes, shredded lettuce, chopped apples, and other favorite treats. Guests are welcome to stroll around the sanctuary to see the cows, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, and other animals, too. After the potluck we will have the always popular pumpkin feeding to the pigs! Come on out and enjoy a fun day with the animals at our beautiful 400 acre sanctuary for rescued farm animals. Event will be held rain or shine, and all proceeds benefit the rescued animals. A family gets lost in a museum and is surprised when the exhibits come to life! An original work devised by Pocket Change Theatre Company and its Resident Director, Brittany Martz, MuSEEum is puppet show, art history lesson, and slapstick comedy rolled into one that children will love. For one day only, come see this new, multilingual show with cast members Vivian Allvin, Klenn Harrigan, Paige O’Malley, Andrew Quilpa, and assistant director Rocio Medina. Recommended for ages 4 to 6.
This performance is PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN (PWYC). RSVPs are not required. But we’d love to know if you’re coming!
