Guest post from Sarah Rabin Spira, Manager, PJ Library, The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. Offering books and activity recommendations around a Jewish holiday with a universal value, though not all the books will be Jewish.

The State of Israel celebrates its 69th birthday, this month. This tiny country has a big impact on the world, and its people are diverse culturally, religiously and ethnically. To celebrate Israel and its people, here are a few different books that put friendships between Israel’s diverse populations into the spotlight.

PJ Library - snow jerusalemSummary: The PJ Library® book, Snow in Jerusalem, by Debora Deborah da Costa and illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright & Ying-Hwa Hu, is about two boys living in different parts of Jerusalem. One is Muslim and the other is Jewish. Each care for the same white cat, and they overcome their differences to help the cat after it goes missing. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and give a sense of the different quarters of the city. (Ages 5-8)

Activity: After reading this book, practice the Hebrew and Arabic words in the glossary. What other words do you know or can you learn in other languages to say “hello,” “goodbye,” “please” or “thank you”? You can also roleplay conflict resolution “scripts” with your child to practice hearing the other person’s side of the story, calmly stating your own and finding a way to compromise or resolve the issue.   PJ Library - hare and tortoise

Summary: Hare and Tortoise Race Across Israel by Laura Gehl and illustrated by Sarah Goodreau is another PJ book that features a diverse look at Israel. During their race from Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea, both Hare and Tortoise make many stops—one of which is at a Bedouin encampment. (Ages 3-7)

Activity: The Bedouin are a nomadic Arab people who live in the deserts of the Middle East. Learn more about their culture together. The book also refers to a number of different foods including baklava, dried apricots, falafel, hummus and rugelach. They’re available in many local stores to purchase, or make them together using a recipe from Federation’s Jewish Food Experience.

PJ Library - everybody say shalomSummary: Shalom is a handy little word that means “hello,” “goodbye” and “peace.” In Leslie Kimmelman’s PJ Library book, Everybody Says Shalom, illustrated by Talitha Shipman, a family journeys through Israel, exploring its many sights, sounds and activities. (Ages 3-7)

Activity:  Download the Reading Guide to learn more about this book. You can also look up the different places that are mentioned in the book, from the Golden Dome (of the Baha’i Shrine) to the Chagall Windows to the Biblical Zoo, which has many of the non-extinct animals mentioned in the Bible. There’s also a version about visiting France: Everybody Bonjours!  Pj Library - time-tunnel

Summary: In The Time Tunnel: Jerusalem Under Siege, a PJ Our Way chapter book by Galia Ron-Feder-Amit, ten-year-old friends Dan and Sharon accidentally time travel from present-day Jerusalem to 1948 Jerusalem during Israel’s War of Independence. Learn more about the conflict that led to the establishment of the State of Israel, the 69th anniversary of which is celebrated this month. (Ages 9 and up)

Activity: Read the PJOW Parent Guide for The Time Tunnel, which includes topics for discussion. There’s also a sequel about The Dreyfus Affair in France. You could also start a family conversation about where, when and why your family members would want to go if time travel were possible.
