Lobby Day for Kids at the D.C. Council

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 ∙ 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Meeting at Freedom Plaza, 9:30 a.m., then heading over to the Council at 10:00 a.m.

Council of the District of Columbia
1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20004-3003

Happening during the District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) spring break is a Lobby Day for Kids at the D.C. Council! The goal is to expose kids to the local political process and thank Councilmembers* for their support of important issues and legislation (or encourage such support). Feel free to have your kids bring letters, thank you messages, and artwork for the Councilmembers.

This event is appropriate for kids of all ages, and will have allergy friendly treats for the kids. Not sure your kid(s) are up for lobbying or want to lobby without them? Childcare available.

Meet at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19, at Freedom Plaza and head over to the Council of the District of Columbia at 10:00 a.m.

*Councilmembers Chairman Phil MendelsonDavid Grosso (At-Large), Elissa Silverman (At-Large), Robert White (At-Large), and Brandon Todd (Ward 4) have confirmed they are available to meet with the kids. Although not available themselves, Councilmembers Brianne Nadeau (Ward 1), Mary Cheh (Ward 3), Kenyan McDuffie (Ward 5), and Charles Allen (Ward 6) are excited about the event and have offered dedicated staff to meet with the kids.

Representatives will also be available to address some timely local issues. Such as:

Amber Wittig Harding, who works with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, will talk to families about housing and homelessness in the District.

Dustin Canter, of the Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship and DC Education Coalition for Change -DECC will talk to families about local education issues.

Alli McCracken, who works with DC Paid Family Leave Campaign, will talk to families and answer questions about efforts to fully fund paid family and medical leave.

Camila Thorndike, who works at Chesapeake Climate Action Network, will talk to families and answer questions about local environmental issues.

Barbara Helmick, who works at DC Vote, will talk and answer any questions from families about the movement for DC Statehood and #HandsOffDC.

Represent an organization involved in any local DC issue? Join the event to meet with families and answer any questions.

Stay updated! Check the Facebook page for this event, which will be updated with changes.

Out of town or not available during this event? Another Lobby Day for Kids is planned for the fall.
